Welcome to the Department of Chemistry and Pharmacy
The Department of Chemistry and Pharmacy consists of the separate research and teaching units Chemistry and Pharmacy. Both of them cooperate closely with other Schools within the University, especially with the Schools of Medicine and Engineering as well as with other departments within the School of Natural Science. This cooperation ranges from joint research projects and interdisciplinary research centers, to an extensive exchange of undergraduate and graduate courses.
In the Department altogether 26 research and teaching professors hold appointments - covering the areas of chemistry, molecular science, pharmacy and food chemistry. Further support comes from 24 permanent and 55 non-permanent members of the academic staff. In addition, externally funded research grants amount, on average, to approximately 4.5 million Euros per year, which help in financing 75 additional researchers. In total, the members of the institutes publish more than 200 articles per year in well established, prestigious international journals.
Research at Erlangen
The Department's research activities cover a wide spectrum that ranges from basic to applied research in the areas of Chemistry, Biology, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science. These are closely linkt to each other and are involved in close collaboration and numerous interdisciplinary research projects within the University (Cluster of Excellence, Collaborative Research Centers, Graduate Schools) and with other national and internationals institutions (GRF Research Programs, EU, FMER, Volkswagenstiftung, GAES, Humboldt-Stiftung, Bavarian Research Program, etc.). Consequently, the Department of Chemistry and Pharmacy creates the molecular bridge between the Schools of Medicine and Engineering.
The research at the Department of Chemistry and Pharmacy has received top rankings not only within Germany but also at the international level. The most recent independent study coordinated by the German Science Council rates the Chemistry in Erlangen as "world class". It was stated that particular strengths of the Chemistry in Erlangen are the performance in research and quality, impact and effectiveness of research.
Education and Degree programs
We offer our students several undergraduate and PhD programs in the fields of pharmacy and chemistry, namely Chemistry, Molecular Science, Pharmacy and Food Chemistry.
