How to travel to Erlangen, how to get to the Mensa/Studentenhaus

Where in the world is Erlangen?

Where in Germany is Erlangen?

Travel by air:

Erlangen may be reached most easily via the nearby Nuremberg airport (ca. 15 km).

To go to Erlangen, take subway line U2 which leads directly to the Nuremberg main railroad station ("Hauptbahnhof") within 12 minutes. Subway trains depart every 10 minutes during daytime hours. Trains to Erlangen depart from the main railroad station every ca. 20 - 30 minutes.

Taxis to Erlangen cost ca. EUR 25, but may be shared.

Munich airport is ca. 160 km south of Erlangen. Train connections to Erlangen are via the "S-Bahn" (rapid tansit) to Munich central station, and then to Erlangen via Nuremberg. Connections may be less convenient than those via Frankfurt airport (see below), although Munich is closer.

Frankfurt airport is ca. 240 km north-west of Erlangen. There are trains directly from the airport to Nuremberg where local trains to Erlangen depart every 20-30 min. during daytime hours. Some of the Frankfurt - Erlangen trains save time by connecting at Fürth rather than at Nuremberg central station. The conductor will advise you.

Cars may be rented at Nuremberg, Munich, and Frankfurt airports, or in Erlangen for those who plan sightseeing.

Travel by train:

Besides the train service from Munich airport (via Munich central station) and from Frankfurt airport to Erlangen ca. every 1.5-2.0 hrs. during the day, some German "Intercity" lines stop at Erlangen and most in Nuremberg where connections to Erlangen depart every 20 - 30 min.

The very convenient online service is recommended for scheduling individual train routes in Germany. You may wish to look up this service in German.

Please note: For looking up train connections to Erlangen starting from Frankfurt airport, enter "Frankfurt(M)Flugh" as departure. For trains connections starting from Munich airport, enter "München Flughafen T" in the query. If your keyboard does not have German "Umlaut" facilities, enter "Munchen Flughafen" instead. The syntax for date entry is, e.g., 12.1.2008. The syntax for time entry is, e.g., 08:00.

Travel by car:

Participants may reach Erlangen easily via the Autobahn A73. This connects to the A9 from Berlin, the A9 from Munich, or the A3 from Frankfurt. Please look at the map.

Common for all directions:

On the Autobahn A73, take the "Erlangen-Zentrum" exit.

Coming from north (unlikely if you followed the instructions above), go straight ahead at the end of the Autobahn exit for ca. 900m. At the fourth traffic light ("Flessa Bank" building at the right, Siemens headquarters = "Himbeerpalast" at the left), turn left onto "Sieboldstrasse". After ca. 300m you will find the "Mensa/Studentenhaus" on the right hand side at the Langemarckplatz.

Coming from south, turn right at the end of the Autobahn exit in "Centrum" direction. Follow this street ("Werner-von-Siemens-Strasse") for ca. 900m. At the third traffic light ("Flessa Bank" building at the right, Siemens headquarters = "Himbeerpalast" at the left), turn left onto "Sieboldstrasse". After ca. 300m you will find the "Mensa/Studentenhaus" on the right hand side at the Langemarckplatz.

Please look up the city map for details.

Parking facilities near the "Mensa/Studentenhaus" are quite limited. However, there are a variety of parking facilities which are more or less remote. Click here to look up a map. You may also wish to check out parking facilities at your hotel. Please note: Hotel "Bayerischer Hof" is located in Schuhstrasse, only 200m "around the block" from the Mensa/Studentenhaus.

Transportation in Erlangen:

The walking distance between the Erlangen railroad station and the Mensa/Studentenhaus is ca. 10 - 15 min. When coming out of the front exit of the station (east side, direction "Centrum/Innenstadt"), two parallel streets lead ahead. Take the right one (Calvinstrasse), after 50m turn right onto "Nürnberger Strasse" (pedestrian zone). At the next traffic light turn left onto "Henkestrasse". After ca. 300m you will reach "Langemarckplatz" where the "Mensa/Studentenhaus" is easily seen. There will be signs leading you to the conference location.

The following buses lead to the three recommended hotels:

Hotel Bayerischer Hof: Line 287, drive in direction "Sebaldussiedlung" (right hand side when coming out of the station), exit at stop "Langemarckplatz" (second stop), go back for one block down Henkestrasse, go left onto Schuhstrasse, the hotel is on the left hand side after ca. 100m. If you don't have heavy luggage it might be easier to walk to the hotel directly from the railroad station (ca. 10 min.).

Hotel Luise: Line 287, drive in direction "Sebaldussiedlung" (right hand side when coming out of the station), exit at stop "Mozartstrasse" (fifth stop), go back for one block, take the street on the left hand side (Zenkerstrasse), go onto Sophienstrasse (right). You will see the hotel immediately.

Hotel Altmann's Stube: Line 286, drive in "Büchenbach" direction (left hand side when coming out of the station), exit at stop "Martin-Luther-Platz" (second stop), go in the right direction onto "Neue Strasse", take the second street on the right hand side after ca. 200m, you will see the "Theaterplatz" in front and the hotel at the left hand side. If you don't have heavy luggage it might be easier to walk to the hotel directly from the railroad station (ca. 10 min.).

Taxis from the railroad station to the individual hotels in Erlangen rarely exceed € 10,-.
